The computer scanner (also known as image scanner or optical scanner) is one piece of technology that, although widely used, has not come to the forefront of popularity as has the copier or fax, nor the computer itself. It is, however, no less dynamic in its application, giving the user the ability to take a piece of paper with writing or a drawing, or a photograph, and convert that information into an image (digital) file that can be saved and viewed on your computer, and even e-mailed. Amazingly, it can do the same thing with a three-dimensional object!

From one point of view, a computer scanner is the ingenious combination of a copier and a fax machine – but not quite.

How It Works

In terms of hooking it up to your PC or laptop, a computer scanner works like any other accessory – that is, you simply insert the USB plug into one of the ports on the back of your computer. The scanner will usually come with a CD that contains the scanner software as well as the driver needed to make the scanner compatible with the computer (if you rent a computer in addition to a scanner from Best Computer Rentals, we’ll make sure the software and driver are already installed!).

Open the scanner software program. Now take a photograph, for example, and place it on the scanner’s glass platen. Press “start." Before your very eyes you will see your photo appear on your monitor (kinda like the character of Mike Teevee from the 1971 classic motion picture, Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory -- or the new Charlie & The Chocolate Factory movie!).

Your image has been digitized and is now a file on your hard drive. You can now make the appropriate enhancements to your photo and use it on a document for printing, or e-mail it to an client, associate or friend – or even use it as your desktop wallpaper!
