A Bit Of History

Fax machine technology has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1842. 1842..?! Well, we’re talking about the beginning of the fax, the initial concept by Scottish inventor, Alexander Bain. You couldn’t quite call it a true fax in the way we define it today. But the technology was quickly advanced in the early ‘20s by AT&T until, eventually, the first economical, portable and mass-marketed fax machine – closer to as we know it today -- became available in the mid-‘80s.

The early fax machines – when they first went on the market and continuing through a portion of the ‘90s – used thermal paper. Although you might fax a regular white piece of paper, the person receiving the fax would get their copy printed onto a roll of chemically-treated paper that the fax machine would more or less burn on the paper.

While we were all grateful for the invention of thermal paper so that we could receive faxes (and thus forego sending documents via the tortoise-like movement of the United States Postal Service), the fax machine did not truly became of age until plain-paper fax technology was introduced in the late-‘90s. With that progression, the fax machine became an object of unending necessity for home and business alike.
